Surgeries Made Safer with Innovative Surgical Sealants & Adhesives

Surgical sealants and adhesives play a crucial role in repairing and strengthening tissues after an injury and surgical wounds. They form a chemical coating and prevent bleeding and oozing of bodily fluids. The sealants and adhesives bind the external and internal helping them to heal faster.

Cohera Medical recently announced that it has received Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the U.S.’s FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to start a multicenter clinical trial for Sylys Surgical Sealant device. The company claims that the revolutionary design will help reduce anastomotic leakage post gastrointestinal surgeries.

Sylys Surgical Sealant is a resorbable, elastic, and synthetic sealant. It is used along with standard anastomotic closure method such as staples and sutures. This sealant protects the sutures and supports them during the initial healing days, when the chances of leaks are higher. The Sylys Surgical Sealant is meant particularly for general, bariatric, and colorectal surgeries.

Another similar fibrin sealant is the EVARREST by Ethicol. Ethicol recently announced that it received an approval from the FDA. This flexible sealant patch is implanted with a new composition of human biologics that provides durable mechanical structure for integrated clot formation. This sealant could be the answer that surgeons were looking for. They had been looking for a 1st attempt efficiency to reduce disturbances and outcomes of challenging breeding.

This sealant patch is meant to be used with manual compression as an adjunct to the hemostasis in adult patients undergoing a surgery. It is used when the bleeding cannot be controlled or is impractical using conventional techniques such as sutures.

This unique solvent does not require any preparation, moistening, or mixing with refrigeration and saline. It also has shelf life of 30 months. It is placed upon the bleeding wound or surface and a manual compression is added for a couple of minutes. The sealant is bioabsorbable in around 8 weeks.

According to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc; the surgical sealants adhesives market is anticipated to reach USD 4.5 billion by 2025. Growing demand for surgical services and growing concerns to reduce wounds caused by surgeries can drive the market.

Cohera Medical, Inc.; CryoLife, Inc.; Ethicon, Inc. [J&J]; and Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation emergence of new local players in the market could increase competition.
